Shades of nightfall drip slowly into the Georgian sky; a few of the lights bolted to the brick exterior of the stationhouse flicker sporadically but fail to remain lit. Those who stand watch over the precious shelter during the day switch shifts with their nightly replacements. Afraid to be out at night, when they don’t have the element of sight to help protect them from the walkers, the other residents make their way inside in a timely manner, bracing for another long night. Sleep comes easily to a select (either exhausted or apathetic) few; the rest battle with unique terrors, crippling sadness, or—in Elle’s case, for one—streams of dull, incoherent thoughts, each of which are distracting enough to prevent their brains from winding down. Many of the doors fail to shut properly, and the locks have rusted away, but there is a general consensus that, regardless, they are safer in here than out there.
